A Composite Strategy is a simple concept. However, it is usually very difficult to test and operate them in real-time. Large money managers often have full-time employees who compute their strategies. With ULTRA anyone can build and operate extremely complex strategies easily.

A very simple example consists of our original two gold systems (DUALB and TRIAG) released in 1994.

The text above is a Composte Strategy Defiintion File (CDF). As you can see both DUALB and TRIAG have Weights of 1. If DUALB last generated a buy signal, its weight is added to the Total Score.

The section following the @ALL line determine the position the strategy is to take depending on the Total Score.

• As you can see, if just one of the systems is on a buy signal, the Total Score would be 1. A Total Score of 1 calls for a 50% long position in the @ALL section.
• If both systems were on buy signals the strategy would be 100% long.
• If zero systems were on buy signals the strategy would be 0% long, earning risk-free interest at the Commercial Paper rate.
• The *ND flag delays the buy/sell signals by one day. This allows you to download the daily data, run your strategy, and then casually make your transaction on the day AFTER the buy/sell signal occurs.

If you had traded this simple Composite Stratgy for gold (xau) when we released it in 1994, you would have gained +71% while the XAU was down -27% over the same period.

• In the POS column, c_u8ndx1.txt and c_goldt.txt are 100% invested while the others are 100% cash.
• The Year-to-date gains and maximum drawdowns (MDD) are indicated.
• Two of the strategies are trading the SPX, one the NDX, and one the XAU. You can run all your strategies, each of which are can be trading different instruments such as gold, bonds, oil ETFs, etc
• The strategies have different Weights. All are weighted 3 except c_goldt.txt which is weighted 1. Since there are 10 total weight points, c_goldt.txt is trading 10% of the account (1/10=10%). C_ulrnd1.txt is responsible for 30% of the account (3/10=30%).
• The last year's results are also displayed (2003).
